In the old days, you could tell people, phone them or write to them, but in this day and age there are loads of ways you can break the news, what's the protocol on announcing the arrival of your baby? Well, as in so many situations, there are no rules! When and how you announce your baby is your choice, you might make an announcement immediately, or wait a few days. Immediate family might be upset if you don't tell them quickly, but you may want to hold out telling friends so that you can enjoy a few days with your new baby without the threat of interruption. The first few days with a new baby are precious, especially if this is your first!
You don't even have to tell work colleagues too quickly - if you've been away from work in the immediate run-up to the birth then a few days silence won't harm anyone!
Birth announcements by post are a good old fashioned way of telling the world your news. If you choose to do this, try to find time before the birth to prepare your cards and write out envelopes. You might prefer to phone people to tell them your news directly, if you're bursting to tell people then this is pretty immediate and most likely you can do this from the hospital even before retruning home!
The modern age gives us lots of digital ways to announce our bundle of joy! Email, text message, instant messaging, Facebook, blogs - so many different ways and no rights or wrongs! If you wish to use technology to spread the message then do - after all, your baby will grow up surrounded by technology, so they won't be upset that you chose this mode! It all makes posting an announcement in the newspaper seem so Dickensian!
